Mk 4 golf automatic help
« on: 22 March 2013, 00:05 »
Hi guys, I wonder if anyone could help with this...

My Father has a Mk 4 golf 1.6 automatic.

He doodles around in it going back to work an back with no issues, but if he drives it for more than around 20 minutes it develops a serious issue when it changes gear.

The best way to describe it would be a loud cluck, and the car feels like its banged into gear, almost feels like a manual car would if you were racing and changed gear really quickly at high revs.

Our first guess was the ATF was degrading, but our mechanic seemed to think this was ok... i'm still not convinced at this as it hasnt been changed in the 6 years my dads had the car and he does poor milage in the car,(generally 15 mins to work then back again) I know this is bad milage for a car so I dont see how the ATF can still be good, but thats what the mechanic said anyway,,,,,

Anyone experienced the same? Or can anyone point me in the right direction as to what it could be?

Thanks
Tony

As Barry said, get the fluid changed plus the suction filter cleaned and see what happens.
