My mk3 golf gti wont start

I have a mk 3 golf gti  and has been running fine until the other day when it wouldnt start after having a look my breather hose had split ive replaced it but still not starting it sounds fine when i try ( no clicking or anything) any help with possibilities appreciated

Have you checked for a spark? Could be coilpack? Common problem.

+ 1 for the coilpack had to replace mine on the 8v.

Just bought a none runner; that was coil pack. When you put ignition on can you hear the fuel pump relay prime the pump? Could be a relay gone down....
