Help!
« on: 17 March 2013, 15:24 »
Hi guys,

After the recent spout of cold weather my mk4 has developed a 'whirring noise'. Ive come up with a list that hopefully will narrow down possible culprits.

- The noise seems central to the car
- The pitch of the whir gets higher as speed increases
- The noise remains both in and out of gear
- Non-existent at low speeds
- Oil level is fine

99' AGU 1.8T

Any ideas? A long shot but any thoughts welcome!

If it was a wheel bearing I would have thought the noise would be distinctively to the left or right hand side of the car? No extra noise when cornering..

Thanks for reply!

had the same and it was the pancake pipe have come loose, if you remove the drivers side wheel arch cover you should be able to locate it there.
Sorry if that makes no sense. :-)

Had the plastics out of the wheel arch today and couldnt find anything obviously wrong with the pancake bits and pieces. Checked turbo hoses from IC etc and no where for it to leak from.

Thoughts on it being speed related as it whirs when not in gear and car idling?

Thanks

Hard to tell, had the cambelt replaced around a month ago. It had been fine up until the cold weather..

Was it just the cambelt that was changed? could be the bearings in your cambelt idler or tensioner
