Headgasket question
« on: 16 March 2013, 09:47 »
Hello everyone

Been thinking of slightly raising the compression ratio considering the fact that i'll be taking the head off of the engine for some cleaning. Ok, so as I was looking for a new hg I noticed that the mk4 2.0 engine has the same engine block as my 2.0 ADY. Also, the hg for the mk4 is 1.25mm compared to the 1.65mm of the ADY hg. So my question is, will the mk4 hg fit the mk3 ADY engine?

Not sure what the point is of raising the cr on a n/a car... explain?

A high compression ratio is desirable because it allows an engine to extract more mechanical energy from a given mass of air-fuel mixture due to its higher thermal efficiency. This occurs because internal combustion engines are heat engines, and higher efficiency is created because higher compression ratios permit the same combustion temperature to be reached with less fuel, while giving a longer expansion cycle, creating more mechanical power output and lowering the exhaust temperature. It may be more helpful to think of it as an "expansion ratio", since more expansion reduces the temperature of the exhaust gases, and therefore the energy wasted to the atmosphere. Diesel engines actually have a higher peak combustion temperature than petrol engines but the greater expansion means they reject less heat in their cooler exhaust.

Higher compression ratios will however make gasoline engines subject to engine knocking if lower octane-rated fuel is used, also known as detonation. This can reduce efficiency or damage the engine if knock sensors are not present to retard the timing. However, knock sensors have been a requirement of the OBD-II specification used in 1996 model year vehicles and newer.

Dropping half a cc of volume on my kart engine will turn it into a small animal but! We have ruels and regs and if I lowered more than what we are aloud I would get banned and loose MSA licence

Thanks, i do understand the effects of altering  the cr ..just not on an 8v n/a engine.

It has the same effect on any engine!

He's taking the head of to do some cleaning so why not raise the compression why he's at it?

I can't tell you alternator if that is to much or not sorry.

Mk4 head is XF is it not?

Raising the ratio on a worn engine will show up the wear very quickly, ever seized a piston before  :lipsrsealed:
Make sure you have a healthy unit first and save ££££££

Well I'm pretty sure I do have a healthy unit, have had it opened up before. I've made some theoretical calculations and:

Old mk3 headgasket:1,65mm
mk4 headgasket: 1,25mm
Bore - 82,5mm
Stroke - 92,8mm
Compression ratio:10.4

So, after some math I calculated that the new theoretical compression ratio is...wait for it ...:~10.9

Doesn't seem like too much after all. So, the question still stands, can you put a mk4 2.0 headgasket on a mk3 2.0 ADY?

Yes it fits, but if you want to be sure then go to your local ecp they will get you both of em in and you can compare, if all the holes line up, it fits

The ADY has a slightly higher CR over the 2E and AGG from what I've read and heard.

However 0.4mm won't make a difference, not a noticeable one anyway. You're looking at a longer stroke if you want to higher the CR to the point you notice it.
