Burning oil
« on: 30 July 2005, 17:50 »
Hi everyone i have more grief with the 16v. After just sorting out the timing and advance issues it is now burning oil.
Had the compression test and came out clear so what could it be? oil valve seals? how much/how hard are these to change.

Thanks for all the help with the timing probs

Cheers max

I asked a mechanic the same - he told me it was easier to replace the engine that to do the stem seals!!!
Don't know if I buy that theory though, if its is not that bad try some wynns smoke stop oil additive, or their engine seal treatment (i think thats what they call it), it apparently renews all the internal gaskets and seals to prevent leaks, is only about a fiver so its worth a go!!

Well it would be easier to relace an engine complete than strip top end to relace seals. But id defrinately go for the latter. Its probably worth having the head rebuilt if its started to get leaky valve seals. You could end up changing the seals then changing them again very soon after when the head comes off for different work so not cost effective. I know you can buy that stuff to stop smoke at halfords but dont know if id fancy chucking it in my engine ?

I know wilkinson sell a good range of wynnes products, alot cheaper that halfrauds as well!!

I've used the internal seal treatment stuff, i definately hasn't had any negative effects, and I don;t appear to have as many top end oil drips now!! - must be worth ago for a fiver???

Cheers guys, Just spoke to the People that set it up and they said to try the breather see if it is blocked or replace. Could this be plausable - where is the breather in question?

Cheers max

breather pipe from block to air box can block and cause oil probs but it sounds like either your stem seals or your rings have gone, compression test would have shown up rings pending on wether smokes when cold only then not when warm and when test is done, or in worse case smokes all the time, but rule that out for now.

changin the whole engine is as bad if not worser job than doin the head, depends on what you wanna do, stop it smoking, or do it so it lasts a good while.

you can do the stem seals without removing the head with a special tool from machine mart, basically it screws into your spark plug hole, and you hook up a compressor to it, after removing your cams and your piston is at the bottom of the relevant cylinder blow 100psi into cylinder, this will hold up the valves with enough force, then using the other tool from machine mart (a valve spring compressor that hooks on to manifolds or studs), you can apply pressure to the spring cap and remove the collets then remove springs etc and then with some long nose pliers remove the old stem seals then pop on your new one, repeat this on the 4 valves for that cylinder then once you have spring caps+collets on remove airline and adaptor to the next cylinder and so on.

thats how to do it on the cheap, it wont offer any long term help as your guides+valves will no doubt be quite worn to but it is a cheap way to do it!!!!

other way is remove head, and replace the lot, valves, guides, springs the lot to do a proper job that will last... the choice is yours!!!

Thanks again for all the help i changed the oil last night and it almost had the consistency of water and smelt of petrol, this could be due to cylinder wash though when it was massively over fueling before the tuning started.

It still smokes but not nearly as bad, also noticed on one of the chokes it was (slightly) spitting back a mixture of petrol and oil . Valve seals and guides it is then, nice little job for next weekend.

But on the plus side it drives nice; a very strong botton end, much stronger than i anticipated.

Thanks again max.

I picked up Golf+ last weekend and the prices for a rebuilt head were pretty good. Some were £250 rebuilt + exhange your old head. Might be worth a look?
