smokes comes out under the steering wheel and you put a new battery in

a contact has burnt -> look which one and replace the component...
for a first look just take the steering wheel column trim off... only held on with 2 screws... can't see anything keep taking things off ;)

I would start at the ignition switch if the smoke if from the colum area

but with any car smoke it can travel (I would say the fuse box).. I also would advise not to drive it until you have found the source of the smoke as you dont want it firing!

be careful of the airbag if fitted.  Suggest auto-electrican or garage really.
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

A wire has broken free!  Take fuse box out and check behind on all the plugs. Most prob' you will find by the sounds of it you will either have a red or black wire loose. These wires go in to a red clip on the back of the fuse box, amongst many other clips and red ones.....But look for a rather thick red or black wire that is near a red clip, that is as best as I can describe it.
