Exhuast O ring/Olive joint
« on: 14 March 2013, 13:24 »
Hi everybody!

I've fitted a aftermarket 421 manifold to my golf, Since fitting it the exhaust has been blowing quite bad because of a design fault with the exhaust! The flange on the downpipe is loose and when pushed to the end does not form and completely sealed edge with the end of the down pipe so when the down pipe is connected to the cat the exhaust blows though the back of the flange around where the gap is.

Cut a long story short, I would prefer to get a o ring or olive joint rather than have to take exhaust off have in welded propely at a bit of expense. I have managed to find o rings on ebay such as:

 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Exhaust-O-Ring-Repair-Gasket-Mercedes-S-Class-W126-Peugeot-Boxer-1-9-2-5-TD-TDI-/260861219402?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cbc8a524a

which would be the right diameter but I'm not sure if it would fit between the downpipe and Cat does anyone know where I can ones made for vw's? Thanks.

If you gasket it up rather than getting it properly alined gases will find the weak spot and soon start blowing, will end up having to replace gaskets regularly.

What ever diameter your exhaust is, the same diameter gasket will be fine no matter what car its from. Unless 3 bolt, 2 bolt etc

It has a gasket it place but A normal gasket does not solve the problem as it only goes round the flange it is the gap round the flange that is the problem!

If I were to buy the item above my understanding is that them type of o rings go inside each flange and squash together to form a seal? Or am I thinking of something different?

Thanks in advance, Rich.

if we had pictures of the problem we could help diagnose what you should do. easiest way as descriptions are sometimes hard to understand :D
