Remember photo's do enhance the image. I got the car before xmas of a vw nut, he had the car for about 9 years, but he bought a corrado vr6. When i got the car it was pink(oxidised), the wheels were black, and the mot was out. I eventually got the car off him for £275 and set about cleaning it. The car is remarkably free from rust, there is some in the engine bay, and the block looks like it has done the miles, some spots of rust on and around windscreen, other than that the worst is a bit of laquer on the front bonnet is showing, but i like it like that, because it looks honest and unfettled. Performance wise, the 0-60 times vary from mag to mag, the slowest quoting about 9 seconds, whilst most quote 8 - 8.5 seconds. My car is the lightest there is i think, 2 doors, everything is manually operated and golfs are well known for developing as much as 5 - 8 bhp when the mileage piles on, providing they are serviced and have regular oil changes. We have timed the car honestly about 25 times and it is always under 8 seconds(7.8). As for top speed on the right gradient of road and ambient air temperature, she will touch 130-135 mph, which probally equates to a genuine 120-125, which bearing in mind the book speed is 119 is about right as the car loosens up. I have thought of an engine transplant, or more horsepower, but this in essence spoils the character of the car, which in my opinion is still the daddy of hatches and makes more sense today with increasing restrictions on driving. I had a 2.3 aero saab turbo(fasttt!!!) and away from a motorway the golf would muller it in real world driving.

ive found that mk2 8v digifant engines with 140mph clocks as standard are very quick. Anyone agree?

yes, they have morew torque lower down than 16v............

* mix runs away from the 16v gang.......

Yes, 16v ultimately quicker in a straight line, but the 8v has more accesible power, and easier to put down, especially when going round the twisties.
