Fault code 17704
« on: 13 March 2013, 13:41 »
Hi,
I have a mk4 1.8T 2001 golf. I have replaced the temperature sensor but I am still getting fault code 17704. The car runs very cold, in fact it rarely gets above the cold mark unless it idles for a long time or sits in slow moving traffic. Then it will rise to 90 degrees and stay there until I start driving again. It then drops back to just above the cold mark. The heater never really gets hot inside the car unless I am at idle or slow moving again.
Could I have had a faulty temperature sensor fitted or could this problem be something else. Any help would be great thanks.

Did you fit a genuine temp sensor?

Change your thermostat and refresh the coolant

Yes it was a genuine part.
Will try the thermostat and let you know how I get on.
Thanks for your help.

Finally got to the bottom of my heating/cooling issues.
It turns out that the impellor on the water pump had sheared off stopping hot water reaching the sensor and registering a temperature.
So 1 new water pump,1 cam belt kit + fitting, £321 less in my bank and my car now runs, heats and cools exactly as it should with no fault code 17704 and no engine management light on the dash board.
Just thought I would share this in case anyone has a similar issue.
