If the bottom ball joint is worn, it will make a noise. Get the joint done and go from there as the bbj is as cheap as chips ;).

if your getting the noise when you go over a bump then you can be sure it's the ball joint and i'd advise getting it changed asap, piece of urine to change takes about 5 mins and its only four bolts and the ball joint is cheap too, about a tenner. to check to see if it is your ball joint just turn your steering wheel until your wheels are facing out and look at the bottom of your suspension strut, if it looks rusty and dry then its a definate but to be extra sure jack up the side of your car up so your front wheel is in the air and try to move your front wheel in and out.
take heed tothis warning ifyou don'tcheck it soon and fix if needed then the next time you go over a pot hole or tossy speed bump, your front wheel could end up down the side of your car and you in a bush or worse in hospital and your car down the scrap yard 8)

in that case check the top of the suspension strut inside the engine bay or your anti roll bar stabalizers which are the connection to your suspension arm, these can both make noises if worn good luck

Bit of topic, but...

Was in west outer London last night, and kept getting this grinding noise, was only when I stopped at lights and the noise went on that I realised it was airplanes coming in to land at Heathrow.  :P

Hi All,

While on the subject of Bastad Noises, I have owned two MK2 GTI's and both of them have an annoying squeak when driving along.  The noise is inside the car around the parcel shelf/speakers and have never been able to locate or solve the problem!

Any ideas?  Ive looked for mice but found none before anyone suggests this!!

cheers, Rich B. ;D

yeah i also had that parcel shelf noise. I found that it was the rear rubber suspension covers in the boot.
They rubbed on the parcel shelf supports. Take them off and see if the noise goes away.

there is a strange noise when I turn my key from cold.

Sounds like a spinning of gears or a bendix of some sort - followed by a petroly fume from the rear.

Can any one tell me what this might be? :o
