tyre blowout at 60mph and still driving.
« on: 30 July 2005, 03:16 »
i was on my way home when the car started acting abit weird, when going around roundabouts it
would make a whining noise, i thought the knocking noise which has been coming and going, must be a bush at the front had gone, its been knocking for ages but i cant find the cause no wheel play etc.. so i
drove straight home. the car was driving abit weird it started to feel funny the handling was like abit swervy.

and when accelerating it would feel like it was pulling towards the left but then it would come and go, even when i let go of the steering wheel it drove straight?

so i thought that the bush must have collapsed!

i get a fair few miles from home and a whining sound starts coming from the rear?

it gets louder i think it must be the heat sheild which keep dropping on the exhaust! i did think the rear
bearing had collapsed or something on the rear had gone axel had snapped but the car was driving? so i was
wondering what it was..

i gets home and i smell burning tyre? the tyre was hot! turns out the rear nearside tyre is flat with a hole in the sidewall on the inside of the tyre!!!

they say people loose control when they have blow outs at high speed ? the car did act rather normal until i started hearing whining noises, thing is i was on a 60mph road at the time it started to feel abit weird! but nothing to really loose control just abit soggy abit not right!... thats why i thought it was the bush!
heres the pics....

looks like its not touched the rim, not damage just rubber marks on it, thank for the 50 profile!

i dont technicaly know how bad this could have been! obviously how things were designed the car still drove and i never lost control neither did the car feel like it was going to loose control...... just felt like something was off! like a wishbone bush!

wasnt a blow out then cant see pics they havent loaded, but sounds like may have rubbed a kerb or something at speed done it a few times, trust me youll recognise a blow out youll hear an almighty bang and nearly always you end up running on just rims with very little rubber left. it is one of the scariest things to loose a tyre like that at 70mph.

I would get a replacement wheel. No point messing around as the wheel would be damaged. Its for safety reasons that I would do that!

Looks like you was lucky mate

I would follow martz's advice and replace the wheel as well tbh

Defo wasn't a blow out mate........

A couple of years ago in my days of driving like a complete loon I was doing a stupid speed of a fair bit over 90mph in the pissing rain and the dark down the M4 on the outside lane. Stupid I know but I have grown out of it now!

Anyway, all of a sudden there's a loud BANG! and the back end swings out and my speed drops to about 70mph. Fortunately by some miracle (although I prefer to call it incredible driving skill) I manage to regain control of the car and get accross the lanes and up a slip road with the most horrible mettalic sound behind me.

Tyre was buggered and the metallic sound was my wheel! fortunately I didn't have alloys back then so no expensive damage.

Was bloody terrifying and am probably lucky to tell the tale!

Its even scarey at 35 MPH. Goign down my street showing off in my AX GT. Car came round the corner so i braked and the front tyre blew, manged to miss the parked cars, onto the pavement and drove past 2 houses scraping along there front walls. Then, when a space came up with no parked cars mangaegd to get back onto the road to asses the damage.

Shook me up for a few months, i always thought "What if someone was walking on the pavement?"
