Pull the cigarette lighter out bud, if its anything like most std manufacturer lighters it'll be fused just behind the dash.
But we are talking about a VW here, nothing easy ! So I would start looking for the fuse in the boot !!! Lol !

Ahem, fuse 21 in the fuse box?

There isn't one anywhere else unless someones modded it.

the lighter works fine. it is the actual light that doesn't work (the green ring) .the lught to illuminate the gearbox gear strip doesn't light up either. i thought that these might be related as per the a2 wiring diagram. i was not sure which fuses/relays are responsible for either of these lights. i took the gearbox cover off to look at the bulb and have no idea where to get a replacement bulb. it looks like it was replaced at some point as the grren plastic bulb cover was lying in the well beside the shifter.

anyone know what kind if bulb is needed?

these bulbs come on as the dash light when you turn the lights (parking or driving lights) on....

the light in the cig lighter... should just be a small glass socket lamp with about 1W... VW don't have a part number for just the bulb... the bulb holder with bulb is 6K0919243 - but might be cheaper to buy a complete aftermarket lighter socket for the mk3 off ebay then pay VW ££ for the above part number....

bulb for auto lever is the same... available only with bulb holder 1h2 927 149

thanks for that. i guess i will be leaving them alone for now. it is just difficult for my wife to drive at night as she is just learning to drive. :) i have yet to come across an automatic vw in a scrapyard. it is like they do not exist :) i was hoping it would be a bad relay thet needed replacing:(
