Pulley wheel doing the samba....
« on: 29 July 2005, 18:55 »
Hi geezas, only just checked in so Hi to one n all

Recently picked up a Mk2 8v on a "G" reg, reasonably straight car, runs nice.....until it gets warm and you sit on tickover.
As you look down through the engine bay, the (supposed)  vibration damper pulley does not run concentrically, wobbling around and chaffing on the belt cover plastic..which sounds awful! The outer pulley(power steering, water pump) which locates into the vibe damp pulley,  seems reasonably square.?? When cold is doesn't make the noise and isn't as pronounced.
When warm, any revs off the throttle make the noise go away.A bit of centripetal force maybe?? Gawd knows.
The engine is lovely and smooth, quiet with no knocks etc.

Talking to veedub spannermen got me the unaminous verdict that the rubber in the damper pulley was knackered.
To cut to the chase, the local VW dealer checked the reg against spec and gave me a replacement. When I got home and stripped the old offending pulley out it turns out to be completely different, with no rubber at all.?? The new one will not fit at all...the spacing is a mile out.
Anyone chuck any light on this?
What model is my old pulley from?
I'm a tad concerned that the pulley wobbles when warm when it doesn't have any rubber in it to deteriorate!!eek.
I've banged sum pics below.
All advice welcome
Thanks
Andy

the off sets of the pulleys vary, if your car is a pas model the off set will be slightly different to that of a non pas model and vice versa.... never knew the pully's had rubber in em, ive removed loads to do cambelts and stuff in the past and never come across that before... let us know how you get on, id try and take the one you have on to the vw dealer to get em to get one the same........ but id go for one without the rubber as long as it fits on your crank ok and dosnt foul the lower cambelt cover

Cheers for the reply.Popping in to see 'em tomorrow.
As you can see in the pics where I've slipped the outer pulley into place in both the old one and the new one, the offset is miles different.
Still can't figure why the "pulley touching the plastic cover" chaffing  noise gets worse as it warms up unless the plastic moves slightly when it's hot?? The pulley itself can't change shape short of 400+ degrees temp and I'm sure I'd feel the end of the crank oscillating.
You can just see the rubber in the first pic peeking out beneath the outer face of the pulley (where the numbers are stamped on).
I'll keep you posted.

my valver's water pump puly wobbled new one and bolts from VAG £15.
Don't know what caused it to wobble though?
probably got the wrong one ordered Like Kniterider says.

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08
