Oh No...... RUST!!! (UPDATED)
« on: 08 March 2013, 18:20 »
Just noticed rust (bubbles under the paint work, not broken through) on both my front wheel arches, so annoyed I didn't spot it when I looked round the car and god knows how I missed it :(.

However after having a google it seems to be a common problem and can be done under the anti corrosion warranty.

Does anyone have any experience or advice they can offer me??

Spoke to my local VW dealer today (over the phone) and they have informed me I need to take it down to be assessed at there body shop (30 min drive).

If its not covered is it going to be an expensive job? 2 new wings I would imagine??

I feel so stupid for not spotting it :(

Mine is going in the same place, i had my mate look at it who's a panel beater and its had a ''smart repair'' by a pikey in a van at a car park so VW wont cover it. :( Mine has gone beyond the point of saving (im not bodging it up) so ill be buying a pair of wings and having him fit them :)

Mine is also going on the sill top just below the wing, this has never been touched so VW will be getting a call!

I will be doing the same if VW don't come through, but from the looks of it my wings are original. My worry is that VW said they have no knowledge of the problem :(.

I have found cheap 3rd party wing from here http://www.crashrepairparts.com/parts/markid/875/volkswagen_golf_hatchback_2004_2008_mk5/body-repair-parts-and-panels?_ts=1253, I dare say the fit wont be 100% but a decent body shop should get them to fit spot on.

I can easy see it been a £400-£500 job using 3rd party parts.

(Found this if it helps any http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/rust_wing/2009Nov9CorrosionToGolkMk5FrontWing.pdf)

Dealers are trying to fob you off it is a known problem with the mk5,it's the screws that hold the arch liner on. Phone VW head office & explain to them & give them the details of the dealer.

Good news!!

The guy at vw Blackburn was very helpful and knew thr cause of the rust. He was very helpful and open warning that I may only get a contribution but in most cases all costs are coverd. He said he would do the best for me and he seemed genuine.

For the record he took lots of pictures including one of the mileage, vin and the readings on the paint depth meter.

I should hear back in the next few weeks, fingers crossed.

Hope you get it sorted, had the problem with my girlfriends GTI, keep bothering VW customer services about it, took me about two months to get anywhere.
