mk2 8valve drinking gas
« on: 29 July 2005, 16:46 »
just wondered if anyone else has a thirsty mk2 8 valve. mine drinks fuel like half a tank for 100 miles?! i have even driven it slowly and it shows on my mfa that i'm doing between 32 and 37 mpg? it just drinks fuel like there's no tomorrow! the ignition is 4 degrees advanced, the co is 0.13, it's idling at 970. any ideas why it may be so thirsty. p.s- got to get it sorted as i had to convince my mrs it was a good second car for me to drive to work and back and i don't want to have to sell her.( the car not the mrs!)

Try filling her to the brimp and doing the measurement again (with sensible driving the whole time). Should get 250 - 300 miles

I've always had my doubts about whether half a tank on the guage is actually half a tank! How many people have seen the tank slowly empty till half and then vanish over the next 5 miles !!

If it genuinely is a problem it's most likely a MAF problem as that's what the ECu uses to measure the amount of fuel to send to the injectors.

Is the car running ok generally ? Seem to produce the expected performance ?

If silly amounts of fuel where being used I'd expect it to show in the way the car drives.

~I fixed the main fuel feed to plenum chamber leak when I first got her. Unless it's a leak towards the rear of the car when I'm driving and I can't smell it? The car itself does drive okay.(my previous 'get to work' car was a micra 1ltr 16v, the less said the better!), so obviously the performance to me seems alright. I raced a 1700 puma yesterday and kept up with it! Is that good? The car has the std airbox with a K&N panel filter. It also has a full stainless Magnex exhaust with a 6 x 4 tailpipe. Could these be to blame???

Other than what Blue suggested (so easy to miss the simple answer!) then the mods shouldn't cause the fuel to increase that much!

Check for more fuel leaks if they've been a problem before and try and get a second hand MAF from eBay or scrappy; should only be £10 -20.
