How can I keep wheel spin to a minimum?
« on: 07 March 2013, 09:08 »
Since owning my Golf MK3 20vt everything is going very well......But!!  On hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd the front wheels will just spin thus resulting in poor 0-60 times. I went out and bought some Toyo T1R's tyres as these are a soft compound and thought they may help, I was wrong!

I have heard about the slip diff thing but they are very expensive.  Any others ideas on how to keep my car from leaving heap loads of smoke from the tyres as soon as she comes on boost?!

better driving skills is the only non mechanical way (manually do what tcs does on most car's...limit the power delivery by coming of the pedal)

other wise it's lsd time (and the expense)

What's the power delivery  curve like on the map as well?

Pull away in 3rd gear.

Thanks people!

As for an 8v, think I will give that a miss   I have had a few 8v's and MPG on my 20vt is not that much worse yet shed loads faster, would recommend this conversion any day.

Power curve is fine, nice gradual climb to 2,100RPM then it goes almost vertical till 6,800RPM

Torque steer is a handful, good forearm workout though!

You'll find your best 0-60 time by launching in second.

Also slipping the clutch will stop will spin, keeping it at bite. I don't recommend that though.

But a standard mk3 box was never designed with that much bhp in mind.  So yes it's time for a LSD

Toyo t1r's are good if you drive a 8v you need something like the toyo R888. Keep the t1r for wet weather.

Grip ain't cheap so its time to spend I'm afraid.

Don't forget road temps are low too so will improve slightly when the climate warms.

Gearbox mods are what a lot of people forget.

What gearbox do you have? Best combo that I've worked out is probably a mk3 16v box with a vr6 FD and an LSD.

Standard gearbox was designed for a revvy 16v with low torque around 4k. Not 200+ ftlbs at around 2.5k. Nothing will really help apart from short shifting 1st and 2nd become almost useless.
