Clutch Extremely Hard
« on: 28 July 2005, 20:00 »
Hi Guys,
My Mk1 Golf Clutch is extremely hard...

Had the car serviced who mentioned that clutch cable seems fairly new so not sure if it is the problem. Any ideas?

The clutch is too hard. Does this mean I would need a new clutch?

Someone mentioned to me that the cable needs to come from the top. but mine just just goes around. Can this cause the clutch to be hard. What can make the clutch hard?

Any advice please.....

My clutch is really hard and I don't notice it until I get in and drive a newer car.  I'd say if the car goes into gear with no problems and it's not slipping then there's not much to worry about and unlikely that you will need a new clutch.  :undecided:

The clutch cable does goes through the bulkhead and if it hasn't got a rubber gromet to go through then it will rub on the metal and eventually snap, had that go on me too, so you could check that.  :undecided:
......now officially dubless.

Change the clutch cable for a genuine one, if it is still hard it will be the clutch itself.

When I first bought my mk1 cab the clutch was really hard but it was also slipping. Changed the clutch, release bearing and cable as a job lot and this seemed to sort it out but you can still notice that it is hard compaired to other cars that I drive. Jump in someone elses golf to see what their pedal feels like.

Change the clutch cable but also check where it goes through the bulk head (make sure it's not wonky)

I had the same problem.

Fitted the bulk head re-enforcement plate from GSF (£10) and a new clutch cable from GSF (£10). fixed the problem. the plate comes with a sticky pad - this is crap, so screw (use self-tappers) the new plate to the bulk head. Grease the cable as well.
