MK1 Mileage
« on: 28 July 2005, 15:37 »
Hi,
I've just been to look at a MK1 GTI '83 Campaign for sale. The mileage worried me a bit, it was 179,000, is that good or bad for a MK1 of this age. Also had to really give it some to get it into 1st gear! Apart from that it was fine and drove beautifully. Any comments on the mileage and gearbox?

Mileage not to bad. Has it got service history? gear linkages sometimes need adjusting this is not a big job (take 10mins).My mk1 cab has done 152000 on a d-87 and i have no trouble

you get to a milage point point with mk1's and mk2's that alot of things need doing if you buy one over this point then its usualy all done

my old golf had 179k and it ran sweet as a nut on original engine but new gear box and clutch

my mk1 has done 77k and things are starting to go  :embarassed:

My 89 Clipper has done 240,000 on the original engine and is just peachy.

The problem with first gear may be nothing too serious - engine mounts might have worn, a new clutch could be needed or worst case maybe the gearbox bearings need reconditioning. Even then, it's not catastrophic.

Good luck!

Is it solid all round? You can replace the gearbox and engine but rot is a not.
