Strange noise from engine bay
« on: 26 February 2013, 09:49 »
I was wondering if anyone could help me,
I have a mk3 8valve golf gti R reg 1998 model ,
its done approx 127k miles and a couple of weeks ago i started hearing some funny noises whenever i revved the engine, either when its hot or cold,
the best way i can describe the nosise is a sort of flapping or whooshing noise.
Any replies would be appreciated,
cheers leigh

Me brother took my car to work last week, and some lad says is that "Supercharged" lol. Me brother says yeah it is

Vacuum pipe leaking or cracked manifold possibly.

breather pipes are a common issue, also worth checking the pipe with the green bungs (rear of engine).

and as said vw manifolds also seem to be crack happy!

I always thought it was Cambelt tensioner. When I've replaced them on both 16v and 8v the sound has gone.

It's king of a whooshing sound

Those to,  tensioner and water pump i changed a few months ago were bloody noisey and sounded like a dodgy exhaust manifold.

worth checking the airbox is put together correctly - if the top isn't aligned correctly you get a whoosh noise.

Try and pinpoint the area, if somebody else rev's the car.
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.
