MK5 to MK6 difference in power?
« on: 25 February 2013, 12:21 »
Hi guys, looking to upgrade my 5 over the next few months, perhaps wait and see what knock on effect the mk7 has on 6 prices.
I did try a search but couldn't really find anything specific to my question so apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere.

Having never driven a 6 (dont want to waste dealers time yet) i was wondering what gains to expect from a performance perspective. Does the 6 actually feel much quicker than the 5 given the small difference in bhp. Also wondered what the weight difference is? I have sat in a 6 and can see a huge improvement on interior which i'm really looking forward to.

Probably looking to change sometime between April and June and hope to pay around £12-13k.

Thanks.

I upgraded from the mk5 to the mk6 gti in sept last year. Yes the 6 is more powerful but the power is different. The 6 has a more linear power delivery. I must admit I'm not a particular fan of the electronic throttle in the 6 because of the slight lag in pick up. I preferred the instant acceleration in the 5.

To be honest I'm not sure there's much difference in weight between the two of them. Both around 1300kg I beleive? They have actually reduced production costs on the 6 and you will notice the slight reduction in quality after further inspection. For example cheaper gear knob and oil dipstick. Even the windscreen glass is 2mm thinner to save money!

I wouldn't worry about wasting a stealers time, that's what they are there for! Go and test drive one to see what you think. I paid £16k for mine in sept 2012 with 38k on clock and mine had a relatively gd spec.

Hi There

I changed from a mk5 to mk6 last year (DSG).

Overall the mk6 is more refined.  The interior is a step up as you have said, but the drive is also more refined (less growly) and it is a much quieter car than the mk5.  Much less wind noise especially noticeable on motorways.  I personally miss the old growl of the mk5 but on the whole am happy with the mk6.  I would advise you to take one for a test drive, the only way to compare properly.

Not sure about the weight difference but someone on here will advise you.  Obviously there is a big weight difference between mk5/6 and the forthcoming mk7.

There have been previous threads on this issue so check this thread http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=173049.msg1614337#msg1614337

The mk5 feels quicker to me due to its power delivery. The mk6 has a very linear power curve which isn't the most exciting but is efficient and has little turbo lag.

The mk6 will be quicker, the engine is lighter, has less lag and 10bhp more (on paper - they're usually test at more than the quoted 210bhp)

Weight difference between the 2 is negligible. It all depends on the spec of the car. A mk6 3 door is about 1330kg and add 30kg for DSG and about 30kg for 5 doors. The mk5 is very similar

Leather is heavier, heated seats weigh a ton, sun roofs are heavy etc so really spec is the defining factor with the weight. A bog standard 3 door on 17"s will be quite light

To me the mk5 feels better made, the interior on all the ones I've driven was silent/rattle free. The mk6 is made cheaper but looks nicer but don't be fooled by nice feeling plastics.

Mk6 has the faux LSD which works surprisingly well so handles better than the mk5 and is less nose heavy as the engine is lighter and to me it seems the bodywork (especially bumpers) aren't as substantial.
The mk5 felt over engineered in some areas whereas the mk6 is definitely built to a cost. Overall I'm sure you will find it better though

Cheers guys, i'd certainly welcome a quieter cabin as i find the 5 pretty noisy even at low speeds (under 40mph) regardless of weather conditions. My rear tyres are showing a little wear on the inside and i can hear this in the cabin too, sounds like a whooshing that increases and decreases with speed which does get annoying, even though the tyres still have plenty of tread.

Regarding the growl, i was under the impression the exhaust note on the 6 was tuned to be a little more throaty after watching a few Youtube vids? Theres a few drag races between the two as well which sees the 6 flooring a 5 both apparently in standard spec . Many of these seem to come from American though so the car could be have been specced differently there?

Cheers guys.

some mk6's have a noise maker under the front scuttle panel which is meant to produce a sporty engine note.

i think the TSI engine sounds like a tractor at idle and when your on the move its very quiet/refined

an exhaust or intake will give you some sounds but the engine note as standard is fairly characterless but saying that i dont really like the sound of modern turbo cars anyway

The mk5 had its squeeks and rattles. I think i spent a far too much of my time on tyresmoke explaining how to cure them from 2005-2008. It suffered just as much when new if not more.

For me its the interior of the mk6 that makes the car quality is down in a few small areas but the amount of kit is up in other areas and I am converted to leather now, performance wise I can't really tell the difference between the 5 and the 6. I am finding the 6 cheaper to insure aswell.

Well I have just gone the other way, from a Mk6 Gti to a Mk5 Ed30.

I had the Mk6 for 3 years and 45k miles as a company car and absolutely loved it. Had to have a new water pump but it was very reliable and economical. I enjoyed the long drives and the motorway cruising.

For about a month I had both cars on the drive so was able to make comparison.

Performance wise the Mk6 feels just as fast as Ed30 in normal driving. Ed30 has bigger lungs and in mid range would leave it behind. Not a lot in it though but now my Ed30 is 300bhp its in a different league.

Mk6 is quieter, smoother, more refined, more comfortable, more economical and makes a lovely noise. It is more grown up than the Mk5. A journalist wrote ' its the GTi that your Dad would drive' which sums it up perfectly.

But Mk5 handles better, feels more alert, steering feels quicker and is just more fun. Thats why I took a 'step back'. Every journey it says ' take me on and spank me !'

If the MK7 can provide the qualities of both cars then we are in for a treat.

Mk6 GTi - returned to leasing company after 3 great years and replaced with :

Mk5 GTi - Edition 30 - Revo 1 and some tweaks - 310 bhp. Its a better car than the Mk6  - Now sold and replaced with :

Mk6 R - Rising Blue 5 Door. Won't be standard 270bhp for long

Family Car : Mercedes ML420 with 360 bhp
Looking at Porsche Macan as replacement

Be very interested to see how that compares to my stage 2 GTi which according to Revo should also be making about 300bhp.......

I was actually in the market for an ED30/Pirelli and accidentally ended up with the mk6.....long story
