ABF related questions
« on: 23 February 2013, 21:12 »
Been away for a while, have got use of a unit for approx 4weeks, I have my 91 mk2 16v sitting there (no MOT and SORN)

I have:-

ABF engine
ABF gearbox (CDA)
Cable actuator for hydro clutch from a SEAT
Driveshafts from mk3
Rubjonny modified loom
ABF unimmobilised ECU x2
New Lambda
HT leads
4x plugs
1x dizzy cap
New engine mounts x3
Welded wishbones+R32 bushes
Spare mk2 Subframe
4x refurbished lightweight BBS wheels
4x Brand new tyres
New steering column with matching 16v keys(Not necessary but thought if I had it in bits I'd fit it)

Still to buy:-
new clutch 228mm (VR6)
cambelt kit
oil filter
alternator belt
exhaust studs
exhaust nuts
exhaust gaskets
clutch cable

Objective is to get the car stripped down and put back with ABF then MOT'd then drive to Belgium to see family. It's a bold plan and I have a Caddy to finish before that.
However, I was wondering what cable should I use with the SEAT TDi hydro setup? 1.3 mk2 golf?

I'm reasonably confident that I can get the new engine in, my main concern at the moment is snapped exhaust studs, getting the elctrics plumbed in correctly and getting the gear shift working, is there any link to the install of the SEAT Tdi shifter in a mk2?

Failing that I have still got the 2Y g'box in the car and replacement reverse switch and a lightened flywheel given the time constraints and that I haven't ever done it before should I play safe and keep the 2Y gearbox?

Should I just scrap the lot and get a sensible car, home at a reasonable time and clean fingernails?!

CDA box may be a bit lazy on the gear ratios. 2y should be ok although they could benefit from a diff or some bolts to replace the weak rivets on the diff.

Here's my list from when I was going to do it. Sorry if it doesn't make sence I've just copied and pasted

ABF conversion

-Wiring loom from rub Jonny.                                        Contacted
- cable clutch from mk2 seat ABF.                             Part numbers sourced
      :clutch cable.                                                                     "
      :slave cylinder                                                                  "
:right gearbox mount (and raise gearbox).           "
- cable gear change from a corrado.                             Can use mk3 one with. Modding
- 4branch manifold from a mk2 16v.                           One on eBay
- throttle cable from a mk2 16v.                                     Vw heritage
- use  MK3 radiator with custom mounts.                  Will make during conversion
- 100mm drive shafts                                                         Found on eBay

Cable clutch info

DO NOT USE A 1.3 CABLE!!!!!!!!!!

Its way too short and is the single component that fails on most cable conversions.

The seat cable you need is part number 6K2 721 335F (Seat) - £31

Plastic retainer for clutch cable end (6) - 6K2 721 147 (Seat) - £1.70
Clutch actuation unit (10) - 02A 141 708B (VW) - £31

Rubber boot for unit (13) - 02A 141 728 - £4.50
Bolts to attach to gearbox are same as used for hydraulic slave
cylinder
clutch cable/ engine mount bracket. part number: 357199356 (obsolete I'm sure but used to be about £65)
it's for the outer cable casing to give the tension and guide the cable.

*Clutch cable - 6K2 721 335F (Seat) - 31
*Plastic retainer for clutch cable end (6) - 6K2 721 147 (Seat) - 1.70
*Cable holder (7) - 6K2 721 397B (Seat) - 10.50
*Mount for cable gearbox end (9) - 357 199 353A (VW) - 18
*Nuts and bolts for (9):
2 bolts M10 x 70 N0195324 (Seat)
2 nuts M10 N01101011 (Seat)
*Clutch actuation unit (10) - 02A 141 708B (VW) - 31
*Rubber boot for unit (13) - 02A 141 728 - 4.50
*Bolts to attach (10) to gearbox are same as used for hydraulic slave cylinder

Hope that helps

Why the mk2 16v manifold?
I used the standard 8v box on mine because like you I needed to do it quickly and didn't have all the bits for gearbox conversion. Been nearly A year and I'm still deciding whether to bother or not cos it really flies along and I would miss the rod change. Not sure how long it will last though.

This is sound advise for any early Golf gearbox as this is the weak spot and a time bomb in the making whether its an 8 or 16v version.

Fantastic re part numbers.
Thanks very much for the info'

I have heard that the 020 can grenade with the ABF torque. Heard of a diff kit but not sure if you can use normal bolts IE high tensile bolts? or is there somewhere you can get them from.
Ordering up some Plusgas too.

Do like the idea of having the CDA ratios as I'll spend some amount of time cruising on the motorway. Idea is that'll be a fun daily but very occasionally skelped up a B road.
Although I will miss my short shift and weighted throw is there a similar mod on the cable shift box?
