Help with 2005 transporter 2.5 update
« on: 22 February 2013, 10:34 »
One of our work vans is on its lasts legs. Not surprised covering 250,000 miles. So I've asked to buy it from them rather cheap to replace the engine and use for my self.

I don't know anything about them. Can I just replace the engine and carry on motoring?

If the 1.9 engine are cheaper, is it a straight forward job like swapping a mk3 vr6 lump in a mk3 gti?

Any info will help cheers.

No.  Bolt pattern is different and so is all the mounting hardware.

You'll need another 2.5.

Might be able to find a 5-banger in a rotten A6 to replace it, just don't trip over any V6s by mistake.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

What's actually wrong with it?

Dads old 2.5 had 300,000K on it and pulled like a train. Til it got the side taken out by a truck.

Sweet cheers for that. Ill just replace the 2.5 if I need to.

Well I'm looking at it when I finish today. Couple people said it sounds like washing machine full of nuts. It's kicking out a lot of black smoke too. So think injector has packed in and bottom end. (Just from what I've been told)

Our mechanic and MOT tester said its f**ked and he don't want to test it and he will pass anything lol

But I don't trust him and he most likely wants to buy it and sell on.

Ah right. Definitely bottom end knock and not some fueling issue that sounds similar?

Like I said just going from what I heard.

If its fuelling issue what should I look for?
What is it likely to be.

I've known fuel pumps and injectors to play up resulting in knackered sounding diesels. Sounds like a bag of spanners.

Viewed it and its not bottom end or anything. The turbo is shot to bit and possible cracked. Can hear a big air leak. Doesn't want to rev and doesn't boost up.

But it's kicking out a fair amount of black smoke. But I've put that down to ecu chucking loads of diesel in because it ain't reading enough from exhaust side?

How much will it rev up currently? Black smoke is probably the turbo failing.

How cheap is cheap if you don't mind me asking? Might be worth it whatever's wrong with it....

Oh it revs up all the way but struggles. Turbo is at fault.

Ill prob get it for cost of road tax £200

It's had some bangs. Dented panels and I've grilled the lad that's been driving it for the last few months. But ill get it running and straighten it out for next to nothing

Ill start a project thread because this beast will be awesome
