GOLF MK2 GTI VALUE HELP
« on: 21 February 2013, 22:38 »
Hi to you all as im new to the forum

I was hoping you may be able to help....

Whilst at work the other day i began chatting to a retired chap who mentioned he may be selling his Mk2 gti 16v.

I am finding it hard to put a value on the car as its an earlier car with a few rare features.

A little about the car.....Its a early 1987 D GTI 16V in Monza Blue with a fatory fitted BBS bodykit and wheels.
It has sunroof, electric windows, central locking but no power steering.

Its not mint as its been stood for quite some time and would require part resto.
This aside, the chap has owned it since new, it has only 70k genuine miles with all history, tax discs & mots.
Its very straight with original dealer supplying plates and all window etchings match.

Wax oiled from new so doesnt suffer from any of the usual mk2 rust probs although does seenm to be bubbling under the 80s marmite kit.

Plan would be a long term project possibly returning to a small bumper gti although im still undecided on this.

Please let me know your thoughts on what you think a fair valuation would be for this in its current cond.

Many thanks,

Ben.

I didn't know they did "Factory Fitted" BBS... That might be BS...

Sounds to me like a £500.00 (max) Gamble as you really don't know what your walking into...

You could have found a bargain but you could also buy a MONEY PIT!!

Thankyou for your reply.
The body kit was fitted as an optional extra by the dealer when it was purchased in 86. I was told it was a BBS edition with options at the time such as a BBS steering wheel.
My first instinct was around the £800 mark but I haven't discussed with him what he is expecting for it. I think it's cleaner than I've prob made it sound. The main attraction is there is a very rare chance these days to find such a low mileage car with all the history to match and 0 previous owners.
As you know mk2 golfs are really starting to appreciate now especially original examples.

Sounds like a plan....

I just hope the seller is realistic on price as you will have to probably spend £500.00 getting it back on the road if its been stood for a few years...

True, so 500 quid is probably stealing it. Hopefully the old man is wise

the out of line body kit and the rust points to a problem but fixable. odd though I didnt think the two tone rear lights were around for a a split window thought they were introduced on the one in ten million edition which was early 1988 and didnt think 15 inch ra's came untill 1990 but no doubt I will be proved wrong. if I was doing it I would ditch the bbs kit and go back to standard small bumpers but would imagine that kit is hiding alot of rust.

My Thoughts exactly - it's a £500.00 CAR  As what you see from the outside is only the start of the rust issues...

It's a valver so Lights "Might" have been standard and the RA's I think were an option on early cars but like you I stand to be corrected.
