i cant find a good pic of a mk3 16v engine so ill try to describe, the tube is situated basically right next to the oil dipstick, its kinda hidden underneath another tube above it, it connects from near the bottom of the engine to something near the top thats like a plastic square(sorry i have no clue whats what) i think its been like this for a while, i want to know what its job is. ill look for some pics, or if any of u have any please put a pic up and ill point it out, thanks

i've had this one go.

its just a vacuum tube mine was split all around the top really badly.. and also looked like it'd gone unnoticed for a long time,

fixing that removed the last the idle problem i'd had. (i had about 5 leaks in total)

be careful how u move the one above about (a coolant one) the connection to the block can spring a leak if its knocked a bit.. mine did  :embarassed: .. but thats how i found the one u just have!

ohh yeah important part...a replacement was under 20 quid from VW inc VAT.

ohh and the 'square' thing sounds like the Crankcase ventilation valve aka CVV (also known as PCV / positive crankcase ventilation.. but i;m not sure how it applies to this.. apart from that its a pollution control device)

If this is the case there should be a small vacuum hose that comes from the manifold at the front directly under the ISV and goes into the right hand side. coming from the left another feed should go off towards the airbox.

sound right?

i editted my post..  just go to VW..  ..vacuum hose may be breather hose in their speak.

not sure how easy it was to fix since i got it done as a specialist along with some other stuff (aforementioned coolant leak)

basicially the vacuum system has to be sealed.. and if there are leaks the car puts out more pollutants and it wont idle properly as there is no vacuum pressure.

its not a serious thing..

maybe.. as it would be venting a bit of exhaust gas into the engine bay.

although that could be something more.. ermm.. :(  (heater matrix.. are you losing coolant?)

get this sorted first n see..
