mk1 suspension kits
« on: 27 July 2005, 21:10 »
Hi Guys,
I have a 1988 VW Golf Mk1 GTi Cab. The shocks and springs are almost completely damaged. I will be looking to replace these over the next couple of weeks.
I am looking for recommendations on what suspension kit to put on the car and where to find the suggested suspension kit at good prices.
I dont want to spend more than £200 on the 4 shocks and 4 springs. Any suggestions please.....

Oh yes, and I dont plan to lower the car either.... but any recommendations that wont cost me much money is welcome...

Thanks

Since you are on a tight budget, you don't have many options here.

Get a nice set of shocks like Konis or Bilsteins and forget the springs. The springs should be fine unless they have rusted and are cut.

Keep in mine that you get what you paid for so don't expect much with 200 quids. And suspension is one of the section of the car you just CAN'T go cheap! Like tyres and brakes.

Hi,
I was looking at the following suspension kit. Any ideas people? Are these good. They are just over £200
http://www.m8auto-tec.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/616_1411_1445_1462/products_id/95209

Any idea how much it would cost me to get a dealer to fit them?

Thanks

Expect to change the shocks in a couple of years....

Dealer is going to charge you arround 100 pounds to fit them. You need to do an allignment as well.
At least thats how much I was charged some years ago in London.

I've lowered my cabby about 40mm with the Streetline kit from Euro Car Parts. The cost of this full kit is about £135 from Stuart at the Leeds branch, this includes a 10% discount if you mention this site (see deals and discounts section and it's for the Leeds branch only). This kit consists of four Bilstein gas shocks and four Ventura springs, the springs may not be a household name, but Ventura make springs for Eibach !

You will then need the cost of fitting on top and you will also need to have the tracking and allignment done otherwise you will be buying new tyres in a few months time, I know that from experience. So I reckon for about £250 you can have it lowered with fitting and the tracking and allignment done and maybe still have some change. The ride on mine is sound and I would recommend this kit for the money to anyone. If you need anymore info on it then let me know.
