Fibreglass body kits
« on: 20 February 2013, 17:42 »
Seeing as abs plastic anniversary body kits are almost as hard to source as genuine sets these days I'm drawing closer to ignoring advice and purchasing a cheaper fibreglass kit.

My question is are they really as bad as everyone says?

hi mate,

never had a fibreglass kit on a golf but if others on here are advising against them theres probably good reason for it!
if it was me i'd stick at sourcing an abs/plastic 1.
old car fibreglass kits ive had in the past have teached me that 9 out of 10 fibreglass kits don't fit correctly and need some adjusting or sometimes a big hacksaw to get it fitting right! Even then you have to create mounting points etc, however some kits include mounting brackets to go into original bracketry.

To be honest, it's your car and your choice but i'd stay away from fibreglass kits, i might be wrong though and they might be a hell of a lot better nowdays.

just my 2 bobs worth

Fibreglass is poor quality and tends to be a really bad fit.

Fibreglass isn't weak, if it was why are wind turbine blades and race yachts made from it.

The problem is the quality of materials used in making a bumper. It's thrown together using any old crap they can find (usually chop strand)
