how do i fix this? rust around filler cap & hi
« on: 18 February 2013, 09:12 »

Hello all,

just bought my self a mk2 Gti 16V, it will be a slow project with the ultimate goal of running a 1.8t.

mk3 gti 8v was my 1st car, so i thought i visit back to that time and after looking at loads of mk1's and mk3's i ended up buying a mk2 :p

im not very mechanical minded but i hope with the help from communities like these online, ill be able to complete most of the work myself.

after looking for awhile, i ended up buying a mk2 gti 16v, 1989, with about 190k on the clocks.

overall condition looks ok, it seems to be idling at 2k, previous owner thinks its the ISV, his treated with some carb cleaner and it settled for for awhile and then reappeared. ive ordered a new ISV and see if i can fit it my self.

what concerns me most is this, rust around the filler cap, will this be a simple cut and weld job?
should i be concerned about anything else? rust in petrol tank etc?

Thanks

Azeem

If you've got rust round the filler cap, check up inside the wheel arch and look for corrosion round by the full tank filler pipes behind there. Mud gets lodged in there and can rot the bodywork over time. Often rust around the filler cap are signs of a great big hole underneath.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Welcome to the mk2 section...

This is what you'll need to repair your rear 1/4 panel, but as above, you need to check the inner panels under the arches for further more serious corrosion
