Dealer used Castrol GTX 10W40 in GTI?
« on: 17 February 2013, 16:44 »
Hi Guys just had a big service done (£279) at my local VW dealership on my 55 plate GTI with 62k, noticed on the invoice that they've used Castrol gtx 10w40. Is this VW approved for the GTI? Always thought it should be fully synthetic 5w30 or something? Didn't expect them to use the cheapest option available? Was invoiced at £42+vat for it too, the robbing feks, asda sell this for £20 for 4ltr.

Should i complain or will it be ok?

I'd complain, make them take out the oil and filter and replace them with fully synthetic 5W30 at no cost to you. They normally use Castrol Edge 5W30 or Quantum 5W30. Can't understand why they have done this?

Thanks for that, i thought as much. I also noticed in the service hand book that the long life oil box was ticked for all previous services, were on this occasion it was not. Really annoyed as i thought i'd be looked after taking it to the stealers.

How do you suggest i approach them as i guess they are likely to argue?

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

Some dealers will try and get out of it by saying that not everyone wants to pay the extra for long life oil, but VW themselves recommend that all GTI's should be serviced on long life oil only and you need to put this point across as well as letting them know that it has always been serviced previously with long lie oil.

Stick to your guns mate

Made the call this morning and Gilder VW state that Castrol GTX 10w40 is the correct oil for the GTI. However after I'd stated ALL previous vw services longlife had been used then he said he'd have to take it up with the servicing manager and get back to me later today.

Not impressed at all.

Just spoke with servicing manager who said he can't be sure exactly which oil had been used so willing to book it back in to put in longlife. Result, although a major pain in the ass.
