ECU different pre/post 90?
« on: 17 February 2013, 12:20 »
As per the title really, have searched but couldn't find and answer. Looks like my ecu is blown as the engine is being flooded with fuel. If I get one from a post 90 car will it be compatible with an 88 version. There's the difference between CE1/CE2 looms but does this extend to the ecu?

Cheers
Steve

ECU - 8v or 16v??

As far as I know ce2 & ce1 ecu wiring is the same it's just the fuse box & connectors that are different.

Have you tried a new TCI unit?

Ah yeah, it's a 8v. Is the tci what sits on top of the ecu? Just looked at that and the connectors seem a bit dirty.

TCI yes it sits on top.

I think there are different versions on the 8V ecu's later ones are Bosch and have a green label.

Earlier ones (I Think) are a plain black box & have white wrighting on them like TAN or KEN

Well in case anyone needs top know in the future I found a handy guide to which shows the part no for different ECUs:

http://www.corrado-club.ca/tech/vwecucodes.htm

and this comment on clubgti which suggests that they will be compatible, the Bosch ones were just a replacement/upgrade from the earlier KEN ones:

Waiting for my ebay ECU purchase to turn up. My plan of attack is (feel free to point out any errors):

Clean all earth points and do a continuity test on cables
Replace oil and filter
Plug in new ECU
Reconnect battery
Switch on ignition, hopefully fuel pump will prime then stop
Crank it over with spark plugs out, shouldn't see fuel shooting out this time
Fire it up and hope its all good
