I am not sure if the temp sensor needs a gasket or o ring when changed...I just have the yellow ring (with the gap) around the temp sensor. Any help with this?

yup... one o-ring = 19.6 x 3.6

should come with sensor (never had one without it), when you pull old sensor out put your finger in the hole and pull the old one out too... otherwise you'll struggle to fit the new one, and if you manage you will either crack flange or it will leak ;)

If you don't have a new one with the sensor then take the old one out and give it a good clean, should be ok, but not perfect.

well the sensor itself is not new..so not really worth changing...i will change the thermostat with a new one and see if that makes a difference...:) if not then I will buy an new temp sensor and then I will give up and take it to a reputable garage to have it tested...it may be that the headgasket is gone..as it smokes a lot upon start up in the mornings...regardless of temperature...I have eliminated a lot of possible causes and will change the fuel filter, thermostat and temp sensor...after this I will give up...vagcom does not show any faults.....but hey something is wrong with her...:(

  • Back in a Mk3...
I guess a plumbing place should have a rubber seal that will work, if needed

Mulipacks of O-rings are available from Halfrauds if the dealer doesn't have them.

every VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda place will have them - 50p
would guess even Ford probably have them (since they built a few cars in cooperation)

what's the problem with the car then? just smoking when you start it?

temp sensor, why replace if not leaking and OK? I posted a diagram here so many times i cant remember where it states the values at different temps... all you need for testing is a cheap 3.99£ multimeter that can measure resistance off ebay.... :)
