Cyclists!
« on: 12 February 2013, 15:59 »
bit of a random question...

i just crept out of my driveway and a cyclist narrowly missed my motor.

he was on the path so, irrelevant of injury, he would have been at fault had he hit me right?

I'd say he was at fault for not contributing any tax towards a cycle lane...

I'd say no...

... but it depends if you pull forward into him, your fault, if he collides with the side of your car his.

This said 9 times in 10 the motorist will be to blame for not being aware of the hazard, this people walking into the road, if you hit one it's your fault even though they walked out on you.

Also whilst you can't legally cycle on a footpath, not all paths are footpaths; you get a lot of shared paths these days where you can legally cycle and walk.

everything your saying is true of course, but for arguments sake, i wasn't driving in the road YET, he would have hit my wing from the side but if he'd been in the road i obviously wouldn't have pulled out far enough for him to hit me. (he would have been on the other side of the road anyway because of the direction he was heading). and, its definitely not a dual path, strictly pedestrians. i know because i was warned as a youngster by old bill!

I hate ride on the path knobs.

I regularly almost take a few out coming out of my drive, but as I'm a cyclist too they get a full blown barrage of  'advice'

An ill twit someone if they say you pulled out to fast. That's balls, I always pull out slow enough to stop for pedestrians/joggers an that. But not some dick going 20 on a bike

I know what you mean i live about a 100yds from a skate park one way and 100 yds from a station the other.
I have two massive hedges either side so i have to creep forward like a snail, in an average week i nearly wipe out anywhere between 10-20 kids/station people.
I even told the council if they cut their hedges i could see people coming and the police  laughed at me when i said about a sign or a mirror to see them or warn them.
The bloke next door did hit someone and it was  not his fault and he is now being done for compo plus it scared the sh!t out of him.

Have you got a clear line of sight both ways along the footpath from your drive?
Anything to obscure your view, like trees, hedges, fences?

If so its down to you to make sure you do not hit anything whilst advancing onto said footpath.
