« on: 26 July 2005, 18:34 »
My gear box is clucked.  So sometime in the next few weeks i'm gonna have to -

a - remove it
b - remove one from a donor car
c - put donor gearbox onto my car

have any of you changed a gearbox??  are there any nightmare points in the process that i should watch out for???

any guidence would be much appreciated

cheers J.

tip no1 is don't let your idiot mate wedge an allen key into the spline drive bolts that hold the drive shaft on!

its a pain in the arse but nothing too tricky, bit of a squeeze and awkward more than technical.

The thing to remember is that it's a hell of a lot easier if you twist the gearbox through 90 degrees before pulling it from the engine - otherwise the driveshaft flanges catch on the body/subframe.

Bloody hard work, even with two people.

When you reconnect the earthing strap to the g'box, make sure you clean up the contacts, or you can fry the ECU (assuming it's a digifant).

will a pre '90 gear box be the same, i.e will it fit?

or do i need a gearbox from a digifant??

yeah i did mine in a morning, and thats with chumpy mate arsing up the head on the driveshaft bolts. you need two people though as its awkward and pretty heavy to manuovre and bolt up etc.. good luck!
