After some sensible advice, (money and newer cars)
« on: 07 February 2013, 22:14 »
Right, over the last couple days I've been thinking (aways dangerous I know) about borrowing money and getting a newer car. I do like my mk3, but it's a 16v and I do a lot of miles, 40miles a day and drive to Cardiff twice a month, 280 mile round trip, so a lot of petrol. Also Im not a fan of the unreliabilty of my mk3, I drive it thinking its gunna brake down the whole time. So was looking at getting a loan of about 6k and getting a newer shape 2.0 tdi seat Leon, I looked at a 1 series BMW, but think I'd get more for my money with a Leon. I'm 21 and still living at home but have a full time job so think that I could pay for the loan comfortably. Think that it's a good plan, and a better option then new car on finance. What do you guys think?

if you are comfortable with repayments (and will be granted the loan) then go for it!

I should have enough credit history to be granted a loan, I've had a credit card for the last year, and pay for everything onit and pay it off each month.

Just done some insurance quotes also. My current insurance £1200. Tdi Leon £550.

Yh but once I've done this 5 times I'd be in the same situation , would hope a newer car would last a few years. Been driving 4 years and on my 7th car

We did the same and got a mk4gttdi which was great to begin with, but no end of of problems, so ended up selling it on at a loss, which means no nice car and paying money back with nothing to show for it.

As stated before cheap mk3 diesel - picked up our tdi estate for 500 and has been pretty good.

Apart from the other day

It's not that, just something to be aware of - if something bad happens to the car, you could be stuck paying for something you don't have anymore.

Yh that is a fair point, and I know that because its a newer car that its not gunna be trouble free. Just think that if I take my time, look around, find a nice one hopefully il find a good one, that's more reliable then the mk3

If your going to piss money over cars, best time is when living at home with the folks.
house/wife/kids/divorce generally restricts whim buying in later life

Just buy something that will last so you have something other than a better credit score at the end.

Tbh this. Im constantly having thoughts bout this car or that car but depends what you want in life. I keep going to buy odd cars for a bit of fun and just can't part with the cash.

I don't like thoughts of buying stuff that hasn't been saved up for yet, though.
