Seen this on a mk3 gti review

"Corrosion is rare on a Golf, which speaks volumes for Volkswagen's rustproofing methods and the quality of the steel it uses. A GTi with rust should scream "badly repaired accident damage" at you. Steer well clear, as a bent chassis will probably have caused misaligned panels and subsequent corrosion."

To be fair not many cars of the same era aren't even more rusty. Astras don't seem toooo bad tbf but a lot of rusty crap about.

Where all my moneys went.

Golf MK3 1.6. Golf MK3 8v GTI.

Apparently, due to economic reason, they switched to a lower grade of steel in mid 90's used in later mk3's, alot of early ones if looked after properly seem to be ok in the usual areas, The plastic arches and trim doesn't help matters, also the jacking points were never strong enough to begin with.

I can't remember which buying guide it was BB, i typed in mk3 golf 16v reviews but like Jamo said it was probably talking about the early mk3's. mind you if it was written at the time then how would they know they didn;t rust, they would only have been a few years old.
