Respraying set for september.........Help!!!!
« on: 26 July 2005, 01:47 »
OK, Just booked my Grey small bumper 8v in for a respray on the 1st september because the lacquer is coming off and there are a few rust patches . the body shop guy said he could colour code my sills, arches, and door trim for no extra cost but not sure if it will look ok. would i need to do the bumpers as well or should i just leave them as they ain't in bad nick, should i remove the black tape from around the rear screen and should i remove the black trim from above the rear number plate?  i have already removed my wing antenna and filled it ready. if anyone has any pics as well as advice it would be ace.

If you really want the arches colour coded then make sure the guy is going to remove them so that the car still gets its proper respray, not just blow over. I never really liked coded arches on mk 2s. The vinyl for the rear is difficult to get hold of to replace after respray but needs removing to be sprayed. My GTI has just gone to have a full bare metal respray and i didnt remove anything because thats what im paying them to do!!!

you could cut costs by removing things yourself.

a guy on ebay sells the sticky rear decals. I think it looks better with the black surround if you have a gti spoiler imo

Those rear decals on ebay are i believe a 3 piece item and the ones ive seen fitted didnt look to clever. The quote i had didnt really make a lot of difference if i removed bits or not. They are taking all the bits off and taking it back to the metal so removing some bits of plastic didnt bother them too much.

thanks gang, golfgti818
so you think i should leave the arches, skirts, and door trim then. i was thinking about not replacing the vinyl or the black trim above the rear number plate just to be different. what do you think??

I prefer the look of the standard plastic arches but must be in good condition and shiney!! Ive seen GTIs without the plastic arches after removal and this looks nice better than coded arches. I think the tailgate look you mean is nice and better than the complete smooth look. I prefer the vinyl around the window. Personally i thought of lots of different styles and colours before sending my GTI away in the end i decided on totally standard look hopefully to concours standard depending on workmanship!!! The price im paying it should look better than factory and thats what ive been promised will have to wait and see though. I went to see it today and its completely stripped engine out glass out etc looks very sad at the moment.

What sort of prices are you guys paying for this? There isn't anything wrong with my paint work at the mo bar a few rusty stone chips (to be sorted asap) but I plan to give it a nice respray in the future at some point

I had quotes for £900 but i went for a guy who is charging me twice as much because il get a really top job judging from work i saw in progress there. Can turn up when i want to see progress take photos etc and il get 24 month warranty against paint lifting and certain corrosion. £900 was more a blow over i wanted a new car look!

i am paying £400, but only cuz he is a mate and he owes me a few favours so all im paying for is the paint, and other bits. i want to go for a slightly modded/slightly original look if you know what i mean. my wifes white gti 8v will remain totally standard though. i have a lowering kit to put on and i have a jig ready to drill my hubs for 5 stud alloys. but all thats after sept.
