I got this bag for Christmas:

I've fitted nearly all my kit in it: DSLR with Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens, 50mm prime, 70-210 f4 lens (heavy) and a full size flashgun, plus spare battery, etc. And that still leaves you a larger pocket at the top with space for a drink, snacks, etc. It comes with a rain cover and a place to attach a small/medium tripod.
Great for days out as you can carry everything in one bag.
The only downside I've found is that it's not so quick for getting the camera out, but if I'm photographing an event I do also have a shoulder camera bag which gives quick access.

Maybe if you won't buy a new bag, why don't you find a friend you can borrow from. Don't go without your camera secure in a properly padded case.

And this is what happens when you drop your camera in a case directly onto the lens. Thankfully the filter protected the lens.

Not long back from three weeks in Thailand with the D5100, If I remove all the timelapse stuff I shot 17gb of jpgs if that helps.

Bag wise I use a cheap dodgy crap Diesel messenger bag I got in Tunisia last year, doesn't look like a camera bag at all.  I normally have a big foam insert for it. but looking at reducing its wait and bulk I got a neoprene cover which fit my 35mm and 10-24mm lenses well.

I joined this with another neoprene pouch for the second lens when it wasn't in use, also worked very well.  I found my camera was more at risk when I was jumping down rocks of rivers than when carrying it around cities or sightseeing.

But don't, whatever you don't NOT take your camera, cameras are there to be used not sit at home, I met many people who were jealous I'd actually taken my DSLR than leave it behind.  Insure it and don't worry.

If you drop it or break it, you'll get it replaced on insurance. So long as your memory card survives, all is not lost.

I've got a couple of that size and a smaller one, the larger ones will take something like 11-16 f/2.8 or 18-200 with the smaller one taking the 35 f/1.8 or 50 f/1.4  with the glass well protected you can happily place these in your hold luggage for the flight or in a backpack when you're there.

The descent lens bag also means you can wrap the body in a towel / jeans etc and not have to worry about the lens damaging the body if it takes a knock.

If an iPad has USB (no idea I don't have an iPad) then you could take a USB Portable hard drive, download the camera files to the iPad then move them to a portable Hard drive. Loads of storgae potential then.

Bag is sorted! Ordered a neoprene one which says it will hold my camra and lense!!

And orderd a 32gb card and stuck my 8gb in the compact 

Packed my suitcase! Then forgot my tripod haha the mrs said I'm not taking that are you! < you know the voice! Lol

All ready to go now!!
