Taking my iPad, but not the laptop! Only 7kg of hand luggage!

I'll order a few now! I'd rather have to many than not enough!!
Also I'll get another battery aswell!

It depends. Are you shooting RAW or Jpeg? If it was me going on a once in a lifetime trip, I would definitely shoot RAW or maybe RAW+Jpeg.
Also depends on whether you'll be taking a laptop to copy the photos onto.
If you're taking an iPad, get the camera connection kit to download photos to the iPad.

My camera is 14.2Mpixels like the Nikon D3100, so a RAW photo file is about 14MB and a jpeg comes out at about 4-5MB.
So one 8GB card will store around 550 RAW files or 1600 jpegs.
If you shoot RAW + Jpeg that would only give you around 420 images on an 8GB card.
If you shot in RAW and got 550 files on a card, with 2 cards that's 1100, that would only give you about 40 shots per day of your 4 week trip.
Is that enough?

You don't *need* a remote for long exposures, you can just use the self-timer mode (set it to 2sec delay) so that you don't wobble the camera (which will be on a tripod) when you press the shutter button. A remote is handy, as you don't have to wait around so much.
A UV filter doesn't cut down the light, they are needed when shooting film, but not needed for digital. A lot of people use them, but their only purpose is to protect the camera's lens. Personally, although I've got them, I've kinda gone off using them in everyday stuff.
See this for the UV filter arguments: http://www.digitalrev.com/article/uv-filter-vs-no-uv/OTMwNA_A_A
What you want for bright shots, is either ND (neutral density) filters, which cut down the amount of light going through the lens (allowing wider apertures or slower shutter speeds) or a Polariser (aka: CPL) which cuts down the light, cuts down reflections and will stop the sky being a white out on a bright day, making it a nicer blue.
Read up on Polarising filters:

Have fun. Remember not to spend all your time glued to the camera.

Agree don't get glued to your camera worrying about getting some shots, its easily done and can detract from your experience!

Unless you've got the new 128GB iPad then there is no way you've got enough for 4 weeks, and even so you'll be in the situation where you're moving data to the ipad only to copy it onto an external drive / other card (does the iPad support external hard drives?).

If I was you double check the airline website, most airlines (the proper ones) don't count a laptop / tablet so you can take a laptop / tablet + your hand luggage.  If they don't 7Kg is quite a lot esp when the D3100 and lens is very light.

As said already, get some bigger cards, I assume you're taking your charger too?  Do you have a spare battery?
I've got one of these for my D3200 works a treat

+1 on ND or CPL

Also the RAW format contains an embedded jpeg so RAW+jpeg is pointless UNLESS you're planing to review shots on a device that doesn't support the D3100 RAW format (as it wouldn't be able to extract the jpeg).

My reason for suggesting RAW+jpeg is if you want to send a photo home, upload to facebook, etc, and you don't have your own laptop with RAW viewing software, then the jpeg is the only image you'll be able to use.
IE, you go into an internet cafe, plug your camera straight in on USB, grab the jpeg, upload to facebook, make friends jealous, come home and do some proper editing when you get home.

If you have the ipad and camera connection kit, I think you can use Photoshop Touch to edit RAW files off the camera. But otherwise, jpeg will be the only option.

I have a netbook I take when I don't have space for a laptop, but it's too small to sensibly use ACR/Lightroom or Photoshop, so I just use jpegs on it.

A lot of It will be just fun with the family ettc! So no editing, raw etc! But for the sake of it rather than forgetting to change it to raw i think I'll shoot everything In raw!!

Charger will be coming with me and another battery will be purchased,

I'll get a 16gb card I think then I'll have 32 in total!

I don't really fancy taking my laptop aswell it's just more cost in thebag for something I don't really need!!

I'll be taking the compact and iPhone 5 on the days on the boat etc as I wouldn't want the Nikon getting ruined!

Once back in the uk ill look at getting lightroom or something and learn how to edit my pics properly!

I think due to the sun etc, I'll get a pole rising filter!

Only thing I want , but won't buy is a new bag as the one I got just fitted camra with a 18/55 lol so the 105 has no chance!
