RNS 315 Retrofit anyone?
« on: 03 February 2013, 07:30 »
The lack of DAB in my GTI is getting to me!

I'm currently running an RNS 510 which is a B unit with later firmware and 7 digit maps BUT I need DAB!

The new 510s with DAB seem to be too slow coming through so I'm considering an RNS 315 but unsure if the factory Bluetooth is the same, and whether the 315 will work with an RVC if I fit one a the same time?
I'm guessing the 315 will need a cable running to the rear window to enable DAB ariel connection so may as well fit an RVC at the same time if compatible.

The 315 seems to be about £440 on ebay so most of the cost will be recouped by the sale of the 510

I was told that the RNS315 had bluetooth built in. If your car has factory BT, the mic will be part of the main loom, meaning you'll have to run a new wire from the RNS to the mic.

I have to admit I wouldn't bother with DAB I have it but in Gloucestershire they dont seem bothered implenting DAB at the moment to you can only get the national stations.  As soon as I drive towards, Birmingham or Bristol it works ok and can get the local stations.

Well I had it in a Beetle the other day and was very inpressed with it. In rural Shropshire it only dropped out for a few seconds in areas where none of the phone networks can manage a signal. I'd have it.

Have you considered this:

They quoted me something like £400 for that back along. Ouch.

That's along the lines of what I was dreading!

Running the new mic wire is a piece of cake, it's knowing which connection on the quadlock connector to plumb it into that would be the difficulty.

How much is the Denison DAB system? That is supposed to be plug and play.

Not quite sure on the Dension as it looks like you need other modules(?)

The AutoDAB unit doesn't work with the RNS 510 and dabonwheels recommend a Kinetic Digitizor at about £100 or another unit which is about £240.

Fitted an RNS 315 DAB with built in BT to my 2012 Cabriolet with to many probs (my original radio had DAB and separate BT under seat.) I did have to get some stuff turned on and of with VCDS, all you would need is two extra aerials DAB and GPS and like  the others said you would need to wire a mic. Mick
