Oil Leak
« on: 02 February 2013, 20:38 »
Hello All,

I have developed an oil leak on my mk3 16v which only happens when the engine running. It is coming from above the oil filter housing, which I think is joined to the oil cooler? Where the square it meets the circular bit on the picture below!!!

I guess it's a seal gone, just wondering if anyone could tell if there's a guide how to fix this on here or anywhere else?

Cheers (sorry can only seem to get a link attached but can't get the image to appear on the post)

Simon

can't see much on that photo, highly overexposed....

where is the oil coming from exactly?

usually oil pressure switches start leaking, the oil filter housing and cooler are one... so if the leak is not from the switch it can only be oil filter itself (but that should not creep up there) or the seal between block and oil cooler.

Hi the leak is coming from the area where the arrow is pointing. As I put in the previous post the only way I can describe it is where the square section (top of the filter housing?) meets the circular section. When the engine is running you can see the oil slowing leeching through.

Nice one

Don't suppose you would any idea of the seal part number. Must be no. 19 on the diagram?

Thanks again

I bought that seal about 6 months ago and started to take it apart only to find it was both temperature and oil pressure switches above both leaking. Under pressure they spurt oil into the rubber caps and then it drips down.  I replaced both with parts from GSF ony to find on Friday the bigger of the two which uses a 17mm spanner was still leaking.

I bought an OEM version from VW yesterday and when I took the GSF one out, I must have overtightened it as some of the thread had come out.  I used the PTFE tape or plumbers tape around the thread of the OEM one before replacing it.  I'll take the GSF one back too as it was spurting out at the top where the electrical spade is attached. The VW part was £ 11.56 I think inclusive of VAT and took 5 mins to fit.

I noticed a problem 2 weeks ago when the oil like flicked on and beeped at me, so I topped it up.  Then on Friday it beeped again and I realised when I checked it was probably low oil pressure from the leak.
Try the replacing both first as much simpler and easier than changing the seal.
