Classic Beetle 1600 super sport help please anyone?
« on: 02 February 2013, 00:13 »
Hi guy's n girl's, Help needed quite urgentishish! A good friend has a 71 beetle 1600 ss which is in need of a little tlc which we are going to begin tomorrow hopefully.
Most of the stuff seems pretty straight forward but the gear selector rod won't go in all the way the gears just feel all over and hard to find!
So.
 Does the selector rod have an adjuster? or is the box doomed? any input would be appreciated as i am going into this without a clue (My wife say's i have to do everything the hard way, but what she doesn't understand is i don't know any other way  :smug:  )
Thank's in advance for any help i just feel this place is the place to ask with the likes of rubjonny's post for keeping my 8v digi tip top!
There aren't enough people in the world that have a clue but you can count them they usually own a VW
I've had an Evo, I've had a Subaru it's all well and good but it was just.... well it just wasn't a Golf!

There's a good chance the knuckles a bit knackered. At the back of the car in te centre there is an inspection flap. Take this off and it gives you access to the knuckle whin connects the rod to the gearbox. If there is play there, it could make it feel a bit sloppy.

The actual gear rod could be bent too. The way to replace this is to pull the beam off and in the front there is a plate which you unbolt and the shifter comes out the front.
Project longterm Airbanger.
