Hi
I also own a 1.6 aee engine, love the car thoroughly as it gets me around town.
If you have just brought the car get to know it, give it a good service, oil changer and filter, air filter, spark plugs, check your tyre pressures, then take it for a drive and see what you done.
Get yourself a manual, learn some simple things like cleaning your throttle, adjusting your gear stick, and have fun while you do it.
If you really want to make it faster after that try this... http://www.homemadeturbo.com/forced-induction-7/vw-golf3-aee-engine-turbo-project-89943/
Or get a 16V!

One of my mates had a 1995 1.6 Polo and he put a 1.1 gearbox on it. It set off alot quicker but run out of puff at about 80 mph. Just depends on what you want from it.
