Which Car Polisher?

Hi all,

I've already determined that the cheap 12" Two Handed Polishers from Halfords are about as much use as an inflatable dart board.  But now my other half has just bought a nearly new car, we've both got something worth keeping nice and shiny, so I've decided to get a "proper" Car Polisher.

I've seen various cheap(ish) ones on eBay in the £40 to £70 bracket, and then others that are £300+.  Are there any experienced Polishers/Detailers out there who can say that actually, these cheap(ish) ones are pretty good?  I'm not dedicated or patient enough to get the kinds of results I've seen people achieving, where every single tiny weeny scratch line or mark is removed, so there'd be no point me spending hundreds of quid on anything.  That's why I got a cheap 12" one.  But that really was £7.50 wasted.

But have also heard of Dual Action Polishers, such as this, but it is really worth eight times as much to a casual bloke who just wants to keep his cars looking half decent.  (Perhaps with one of these I would actually take more pride in my painwork.)

The cheap Silverline is perfect for a beginner like yourself, but bear in mind that you'll need pads and polishes to use with it as well. The DA machines are good, but won't offer the level of correction that the Rotary will. It is much safer to use for a beginner, but if you exercise caution and do your research, a rotary is a safe machine. Don't get too hung up on horror stories posted by people that use them dry at 6000 rpm whilst leaning on the machine on the same part of bodywork for minutes at a time!

Thanks for the reply, I'd already seen one of those pages at Detailing World, but will spend a lot more time reading them when I get round to giving it a go proper.

And I impulsively bought a Meguiars G200v2, which should be arriving soon.  Just need some nice weather now...
