Best way to do it properly is to cut and weld.

To do it properly would be a lot of work. Bodge with fibreglass is miles better than a bodge weld job.

I agree, if it's not structural, fibreglass is fine. Rust treatment, bit of red oxide, fibreglass, filler, paint. Done. Mine is the same, will get around to doing it one day.
