Hi all, this is my first post on here since buying a second hand VW Golf GTI 1.8 a few weeks ago. I thought I'd start here by seeing if anyone had any ideas as to my niggles!!

First of all, The car drives very well up to a point around 75mph-85mph where the engine suddenly gets very noise/boomy - pretty sure it's coming from the engine and not the exhaust, but above 85mph its goes quiet again as I'm thinking it should be around 80mph...(not that I regularly go above this!!!)

Can anyone suggest what might be causing this? Like I say, it's pretty quiet up to that point and again after, just seems to boom/resonate around 80mph!

Cheers

Mine does the same (gets louder 80-85).  Don't think its a problem - probably just hit the resonant frequency of the exhaust manifold or something!

I find it makes me drive faster, as it gets louder if I go under 85!  ( only when driving on autobahns though  )

Mine does the same, though the noise gets louder the faster I go. Quite like the sound of the engine though

my 20v mk4 does this too, think its just the noise of the induction side pf things, they have for some reason used a heat resistant plastic for the intake manifold on this model. mines probably noiser than the others as i run  mine with out the gay plastic engine sheild on also

As you can get induction kits/filters that make the engine noisier, can you get similar filters/kits to reduce the noise / dampen the sound which would help solve my problem?

Cheers

Nope, dodging traffic at silly speeds on the motorway causes me no problems.. think you may need your bushes looking at.
