MAF Sensor

Could someone please tell me what the symptoms of a faulty MAF sensor would be as I think mine may be on its way out but can't afford £70 from my local dealer to look at it.

you will probably find your gti has a kind of "flat spot" mine was between 2-3k and was very annoying, word of warning mate getting it replaced is not cheap i paid paid £120 to get mine changed but it will make a world of difference to a spluttering gti. hope this helps

what sypmtoms do you have ? does it make a difference if you drive with the MAF unplugged ?

Mine died before they introduced the exchange scheme and i got stung 300 odd quid. If you decide it does need replacing drive down to the dealership, ask if they have any units for exchange in stock, then go out to the car and remove yours, take it in and exchange it. Don't pay a labour charge its a 10 minute job.

Well symptoms are the car seems to lag a little, its hard to explain but as you know when you put your foot down you are pushed to the back of your seat but now and then you feel that pressure go then come back again as though you are letting off the throttle ever so slightly, the car is still back and forth to the garage I bought it at second hand so if it is faulty then they are replacing it as the car has not been right since purchase.

Also the car sometimes sounds very odd while idling and often idles above 1000Rpm and sounds over reved where as other times the car is alot quieter and idles at lightly under 1000Rpm. Same applies to driving sometimes the car feels really smooth and quiet and others a little jerky.

please tell more about this exchange scheme. do you need to have bought the car from the dealers? etc etc

i used the dealership exchange scheme about a year back.  Phoned them up to make sure they had one in stock.  They need to know few things about engine but thats it.  No SH or owt required.  remove yours 2 minutes, swap with dealers, fit new, back to normal.  Think exchange was about £70.

Even if this isn't the problem, though sounds like it is, the mafs seem to have a limited life so its money well spent in my books.
