Interior cleaning products.... what's best?
« on: 27 January 2013, 21:56 »
I am in need of cleaning the anniversary's interior, mainly the seats and the seatbelts.

the seats look fairly clean but the seat belts are proper dirty (and possibly a bit mouldy... well old mould maybe?) and being red they really do need some cleaning up, Is there a product that I can clean both with or should I buy separates?

oh and I guess I will need to either steam them both or will just a sponge and water work?

Go easy on the belts, DON'T soak them.
Pull each belt out fully whilst cleaning and don't retract them till they are bone dry.
Only need mild detergent or a very very weak apc mix, mist n wipe till your happy the craps gone then go over as many times as needed with a dry cloth to remove excess moisture,
Another tip for stoping mould coming back during the drying process is put a drop or two of zoflora in your apc mix which will stop the bacteria reforming while they are wet.
Quickest way to dry them(safely) is leave them fully out as I said above and run your engine for an hour or two(if possible) with heaters on.
Don't try and dry them out with a hair dryer.

Sorry if that sounds bossy but safety is a must when messing with seat belts ;)

Hope this helps.

I should say the mould is old and not active, I guess they were used on wet clothes and then not used for a while?

I will only use a damp cloth and will dry them out properly, somone said use some G101 or bio brisk for both seats and belts. I was hoping to use simple interior foam stuff! (I am from Yorkshire so I'm tight with ££)

I guess I will need to go carefull on the belts what ever I buy!

Yep g101 is a great apc though must be highly diluted for cleaning belts, bio brisk is great too though its better used through a machine tbh.
You could try a foam product from halfrauds if the budget is tight but how effective they will be I don't know.
Zoflora is only a few quid and can be purchased in all supermarkets, comes in quite a few different fragrances, lavender and Lilly smell the best IMO ;) and you only need a small capfull, great antibacterial solution which I use every time I'm doing a full interior deep clean.

I've used G101 Brisk and Bio Brisk. Can't fault any of them. The Bio is good for the mould.

I use detail multipurpose wipes and it seems to keep the mould at bay for a while.

A vacuum cleaner on mould on dry seats is what I use these days, in the past I wasted a fortune on vinegar and tea tree oil which rescued one interior only for it to go completely on me a while later.

Thanks to a rear light cluster leak I need to sort out and the weather against me, my car is happily letting water in which isn't helping my anti-mould campaign one bit.

Currently trying to deal with black mildew spots on the headlining, any suggestions?

I did buy some stuff called starbrite only to discover their idea of headlining is made from vinyl, not tried it yet but tempted, presume it will be bleach like and make the headlining brighter than before, but better than horrible mould spots.

One more thing to add, I have noticed every time I've tried enzyme cleaners (eg fe breeze) I tend to get mould grow quite quickly - sure it can't be just coincidence.

Chief.

For best results you need very warm water and as I stated in above posts some zoflora anti-bac and a wet n dry vacuum (George hoover),
Any remaining spores will 100% reform and grow so the only way to tackle it is to remove as much as possible via the above method, a quick flick over isn't going to cut it unfortunately,
The warm water activates your enzyme cleaner and the zoflora stops nasty smells and the reforming of mould whilst the fabric is drying,
You really need to go over infected areas twice even three times in some cases to completely remove the spores (depending how bad it is to start with) .
