Tandem Fuel Pump
« on: 27 January 2013, 10:08 »
Changed my tempreture sensor and thermostat yesterday as one of them was playing up so just done the two but as I had the car running and I was looking around the bay I noticed on the Fuel pump on the side of the engine there was some very faint air bubbles im guessing fuel, the leak wasnt bad but still enough for me to notice it so I intend on getting it sorted.A friend of mine who I gave a call about it reakons there was a VW recall back in 2005 something to do with the bolts so he suggested give VW a ring on Monday but im not really sure if VW would still carry out the fix if there was a recall?Failing that is it just a case of replacing some gaskets or a new fuel pump?Has anyone else came across this problem thanks..

I know you're reluctant to take a pic of your dirty engine bay, but this is a time where a pic will paint a thousand words!

There was a some kind of recall but I had no luck with it, they looked my car and up and said no recall listed so I replaced the pump myself back in November, bought a brand new one from darkside and followed this guide...

It was an easy job, no leaks since

So depending on where yours is leaking exactly you may just need a new gasket, they are either o-ring type or metal plate type, dep on model year/engine number (always use same version thats fitted to your car)

You can get the o-ring or metal gasket for the cyl head side but the end plate gasket is not available to buy, people have tried but afaik no-one has yet been able to find one. Its meant to be a non serviceable unit and there are no spares bar the main gasket.

You can unbolt the end plate and seal it as that guy has done, thats your best bet.

Thats great news if true, but I don't think its likely, here is a screengrab of the pump and the two types of gasket...
