Steering wheel wobble??
« on: 23 January 2013, 22:42 »
As above when at low speed, for example, second gear at 25MPH and I let go of steering wheel, it wobbles left to right, like as though it's got loads of play in it.

I've check the tyres for bubbles, they are okay.
Checked tyre pressure, all good
Had the car on the ramp, I noticed the wishbone bush had detoriated, driver side, so I replaced that with a new wishbone arm and also changed balljoint whist I was at it.

Everything else is tight, such as track road ends, steering rack, etc

A brief description on what happend.

My brother full locked the car and started reversing, without doing his checks and hot another parked car, I know, where was he looking....

Anyway the wheel kissed the other cars front bumper, causing the bumper to go in, and after that is car has started to wobble lol

What could I be?, going to get it tracked up, but before I do that, anything else I would look at or replace

cheers

Could be tracking, like you said get that checked first, laser checked preferably.

Could also bit a bit of damage to rack? Mine started to get a bit more play at higher speeds as its worn down.

Does it vibrate through to the car or is it just feel with wheel?

Yeah going to get it tracked up and see what that does. and yeah it does vibrate, you can feel it in the steering wheel.

The last time i had this was on my own MK3 GTI, But that was due to the wheels bolts not being tightend, Infact they were completely loose.

But i've checked wheel bolts on this and they are tight.

Don't know what else it could be

If the wheels arent balanced that can cause wobble on the steering wheel but more likely to feel it at higher speeds.

Hmm,

I've got 4 genuine brandnew steel wheels for a MK4 sitting in shed, Going to mount new tyres on them, get them balanced, track car up and then see, if it makes a difference. Hoping it will do
