1993 MK3 GTI, NO HOT AIR
« on: 23 January 2013, 18:29 »
Hi, please dont think Im being lazy here, I have tried to find the solution before asking, but Im at my wits end.

I've fitted a new stat (which was great fun) and thought this was the problem, but I still have no hot air, fan works on all settings, new stat works great and i have red hot flow and return through the firewall?

If anyone can offer some insight I'd be forever grateful

Hi, I have seen that mentioned, but if the matrix was gone surely there wouldn't be heat on the return?

You need to bleed it properly. Have a look in the mantanance section.

mk3s aren't that difficult to bleed, if both pipes to the matrix are hot i would rather suspect that the flap in the air flow path is stuck on cold. have you checked that the steel cables from the heater controls are still attached?

if yes with everything off (that is if you got a normal heater) can you hear the flap moving or not when you turn the heater dial round quickly?

I once had this after changing the coolant on my old mk3.

Bled the system, but could not for the life of me get the heater to blow hot air.

In frustration I hammered the throttle, and hot air started blasting out of the vents! Must have been a big old air block in the matrix/pipes that was only cleared by a bit of pressure.

If the water pump has seen better days, that would result in no hot air aswell.

Seen this happen on a mates Saab, no hot air, took out thermostat, still not hot air, changed water pump and guess what?, we got hot air lol

or as above, bleed the system

Many thanks for all the advice guys, I have tried moving the dial really quickly and can hear the metal flap clang (Technical term) against the stop, I didn't really spend a lot of time trying to bleed it so I'll make that my next task and also see if the control cables are in place. I don't even want to think about the water pump being broken!.

well then bleed again.... it's not tricky on the mk3 but if it wasn't really done at all

even water pump is not a bad job on the gti engine - 1h job tops.... got a new pump sitting around that was bought for my 2.0 estate before i scrapped it as other things went wrong (£££)
