Will not rev past 5000 rpm???...help...?
« on: 24 July 2005, 13:33 »
Hi,
Ive just purchase a immaculate 98' silver mk3 8v gti with 43'000 with full dealer history. She is sweet as a nut apart for 1 thing, it will not rev past 5000 rpm. This happens when I'm  at stand still, also when I am driving going through the gears it will not get past the 5 mark it feels like it is hitting the rev limiter, other than that the engine feels fine plenty of pull and its idling is OK..This is my 4th gti but my 1st mk3 ( all the last being mk2 8v and 16v) and Ive never had this kind of problem before plz can someone put any light on this as it is doing my head in as every garage I take it to is saying it could be a completely different thing.. :undecided: :undecided: :undecided:

First thing to check is the base ignition timing. If this is wrong, the engine will 'pink' and the ecm will not allow it to rev high.

Other than this, it will be the hall effect sender that is at fault (attached to the side of the distributor)

Your local VW place shouldn't charge you mopre than £30 to set base ignition timing and check for fault codes.

I know that this subject has caused some contraversy in the past, but this method really does work to cure this fault!

Get soneone to sit in the drivers seat , whilst you twist the throttle in the engine bay , if it goes above 5000 then its the cable .

When it hits 5000 rpm mark it bounces just like you hit a rev limiter, its not like it just gets to 5000 and stops dead, like it wants to go but it can't.

Just a warning for when you get to VW....

If the base ignition timing is wrong, this WILL post a fault in the ECM i.e. Hall effect sender no signal (or something like that.)

This does not necessarily mean that the sensor is at fault, just that it is out of range, so it thinks that it is faulty.

When the base timing is set, 90% of the time, it will be cured and no fault codes will remain. The other 10% of the time, there is actually a fault with the sensor and it will require replacement. if this is the case, it will probably be cheaper to replace the distributor.

Hall sender £40 + labour time to strip, rebuild, refit and re-time engine (approx 1.5 hours)
Distributor  £90 + labour time to remove + refit distributor and retime engine (approx 0.5 hours)

or,

distributor from ebay/scrappy etc £20 + VW's labour time = cheap!!!

Just to give you some cost cutting ideas!!!

Hope this helps. Make sure you let me know the outcome.

Cheers, steve.

using VW stealerships = :( for your wallet..

dont let them stack up other jobs that aren't related.. they are notorious for stacking on unrelated and unneeded jobs to extract your cash from you. VW must run some kind of sales league or something for them to act like such scum

use a local vw specialist there are enough of them around.
Used to have a '97 MK3 16v GTI 3dr in 'Black Magic'... now have a '55 Civic Type-S...

wise words overseer!

A very valid point, you should never give away cash needlessly to a dealership when a specialist will do, but they do have their uses! If you go in there and tell them exactly what you want them to do and look like you know what you're talking about, then you won't get stung!

I have the advantage of experience in being a service advisor for VAG. Luckily, the company i worked for were very honest, but you do get others that will get your car in for minor work i.e. oil change, and 2 mins later, the service advisor is coming over with a list as long as his pinochio looking nose.......brakes, suspension, tyres, etc.etc. But you can say NO.

The thing is, that when a franchise dealership gets a car in for service, they like to look over a car and tell you exactly what the condition of the car is. The reason for this is that, if a car leaves the premises in an unsafe state, there is an element of comeback involved.e.g. if you take your car in for an oil change, and they fail to tell you that you have bald front tyres and you then have a crash, you could argue that it was the dealership's responsibility to tell you! (SILLY)
